Mechanical Properties of SiC-Whisker — Reinforced TZP

Abstract

Almost fully dense (~ 99% TD) TZP composites reinforced with up to 30 vol. % SiC whiskers were fabricated by hot-pressing at 1450°C for 10 min. At room temperature, the fracture toughness is increased’ (~ 11 MPa √m; TZP matrix: — 7 MPa √m) by the whisker reinforcement while the fracture strength is reduced due to the thermal mismatch stresses (~ 600 MPa; TZP matrix: — 1150 MPa). The strength at 1000°C, however, is enhanced by the introduction of 30 vol. % SiC whiskers (~ 380 MPa; TZP matrix: — 160 MPa).
