A Notched Ring Fracture Toughness Test for Ceramics

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Fracture Mechanics of Ceramics ((FMOC,volume 3))

Abstract

This paper describes a new method of measuring the fracture toughness of brittle materials that uses internal pressurization of an externally edge-notched ring specimen to generate an accurately known stress state. Stress intensity calibrations derived by finite element analysis are presented for three ring geometries. The results obtained when one geometry was investigated experimentally are shown to be consistent with the analytical solution. Values of KIC obtained using the new test method are given for quartz and zinc sulfide.
