Abstract
Ceramic-to-ceramic and ceramic-to-metal adherence plays an important role in the use of thick films for both microelectronic and protective coating applications, as well as in joining bulk materials. Test techniques have been developed to measure adherence in terms of the fracture resistance of such systems. This approach can be combined with a simple fracture mechanics model of the systems based on bulk material properties to examine the role of materials parameters in the adherence of such systems. This offers a means of designing for improved adherence and of examining the effects of processing conditions and materials employed on the fracture toughness of the system.
