Evolution of Chesapecten (Mollusca: Bivalvia, Miocene-Pliocene) and the Biogenetic Law

  • Chapter
Evolutionary Biology

Abstract

The theory of recapitulation associates the developmental sequence with evolutionary change. Haeckel (1866) and von Baer (1866) were prominent in formulating the rules asociating ontogeny and phylogeny. Haeckel’s Biogenetic Law (“ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny”) emphasizes terminal additions to the developmental sequence during the evolutionary history of a group. Von Baer’s Rule emphasizes the primitive or general nature of early developmental events and the specialized nature of features that appear late in development.
