Abstract

Nicotinic acid is one of several available agents which lower the levels of plasma lipids (1). For several years, we have been using nicotinic acid in the treatment of patients with coronary heart disease and elevated plasma lipid levels. In our clinical experience we have been impressed by its effectiveness in lowering both plasma triglycerides and plasma cholesterol. This suggested to us that nicotinic acid reduced the levels of both the triglyceride- rich very-low-density (VLD) lipoproteins (LP) and the cholesterol-rich low-density (LD) LP. The purpose of this study was to establish

    Does treatment with nicotinic acid lower the levels of both VLD- and LD-LP in various types of hyperlipoproteinemia?

    Does treatment with nicotinic acid change the chemical composition of the three major plasma LP classes?
