Abstract

Selected issues arising in the continuum mechanics analysis of instability and fracture in ductile metals are discussed. Three topics are considered: (i) the role of material rate dependence in setting the character of governing equations, (ii) deformation and failure in porous plastic solids and (iii) the direct calculation of fracture toughness from an analysis of the microscale ductile fracture mechanism.
