Abstract
An increased intake of foods providing plant cell walls (or dietary fiber) almost invariably results in an increase in fecal wet weight, fecal dry matter, and the energy content of the feces. Although this increased fecal loss is to be expected because the diet provides an increased intake of indigestible cell wall material, many workers have argued that there is also evidence for effects on the digestion and absorption of other nutrients (McCance and Walsham, 1948; Widdowson, 1960; Southgate and Durnin, 1970).
