Oocyte-Somatic Cell Interactions During Oocyte Growth and Maturation in the Mammal

  • Chapter
Oogenesis

Part of the book series: Developmental Biology ((DEBO,volume 1))

Abstract

Compared with most somatic cells, the oocyte is a very large cell in which the area of plasma membrane—the oolemma—is relatively small in relationship to the large volume of cytoplasm. Consequently, various systems of communication have evolved between the oocyte and somatic cells to supply the oocyte with sufficient nutrients for oogenesis and early embryo-genesis. In some species, oocyte support cells have direct cytoplasmic continuity with the ooplasm (see Raven, 1961, for review). In contrast, oocytes of other species, including mammals, do not have a direct cytoplasmic bridge to the supporting cells. Rather, a specialization of juxtaposed plasma membranes of the oocyte and adjacent somatic cells provides the avenue of communication between these cells. This specialization is called a gap junction. Through this coupling pathway, nutrients are passed to the oocyte; also through this pathway pass molecules that regulate oocyte development. The nature and function of this cell-to-cell communication system during oocyte growth and meiotic maturation are the subject of this chapter.
