Genetic Microevolution in the Åland Islands, Finland

  • Chapter
Current Developments in Anthropological Genetics

Part of the book series: Advances in Human Genetics ((CDAG,volume 2))

Abstract

The Åland Islands are a rich source of data for studies in genetic structure. Four generations of parent-offspring data have been collected for a large proportion of the population, and genetic marker studies have been done for each of these individuals. The founding population was well defined and reasonably small (about 5000), and the islands have been relatively isolated until quite recently. (See Chapter 10 for a summary of Åland’s history and physical setting.)
