Alpha2-Adrenergic Agonists (Centrally Acting Antihypertensive Agents)

  • Chapter
Current Cardiovascular Drugs

Abstract

Centrally acting inhibitors of the sympathetic nervous system have been available for the treatment of hypertension for nearly 40 years. This clinical use has been limited because of the central sedative and depressive effects associated with the antihypertensive action of these drugs. The search continues for similar acting drugs that do not produce these unwanted effects.
