Renal Circulation, Glomerular Filtration, and Renal Handling of Sodium, Potassium, and Chloride

Abstract

Central to many hemodynamic considerations of the renal circulation is the phenomenon that renal blood flow (RBF) and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) remain almost constant when arterial pressure is increased above 90 mm Hg. Because the correlation between arterial pressure and renal resistance is observed in denervated and isolated-perfused kidneys, it is generally believed that the mechanism responsible for the circulatory adjustments is located within the kidney, and hence this mechanism is referred to as autoregulation.
