Abstract

Twenty years ago, Scribner et al. (1960) first treated chronic uremic patients by maintenance hemodialysis. Although hemodialysis was promptly recognized as a scientific breakthrough, it was not anticipated that the first two patients so treated would survive for more than ten years. The growth of the hemodialysis field, reviewed in thorough and scholarly fashion by Drukker (1978), also exceeded expectations.
