Abstract

A 66-year-old male, retired family physician was referred to The Ohio State University Dermatology Service on July 18, 1987. He was initially seen by another dermatologist for a polymorphic blanching eruption that included target-type lesions. At that time the tentative diagnosis was erythema multiforme believed to have been induced by a ten-day course of cefaclor (Ceclor) that already had been discontinued. No biopsy was performed. Over the ensuing nine days he developed hemorrhagic lesions over his legs, which subsequently spread over his trunk and proximal upper extremities. Ulcerations developed over each ankle. He denied arthralgias, melena, abdominal pain, hematuria, dyspnea, or chest pain.
