Abstract
The purpose of this chapter is to call attention to the importance of biological influences in theories of psychopathology. The author’s interest in writing such a chapter stems, in part, from his frustration and disappointment in reading numerous papers by behaviorally oriented clinical psychologists. Although the wave of behaviorism that has swept over clinical psychology in the last two decades has had a creditable effect on the rigor with which behavioral issues are addressed, all too often behaviorally oriented investigators adopt a narrow environmental view, giving the impression of being completely unaware of the need to expand their theoretical position. It is hoped, therefore, that this chapter will serve to alert the large audience for which this book is intended to the need to adopt a psychobiological approach to psychopathology.
