Opiate Abuse and Dependence Disorders

  • Chapter
Comprehensive Handbook of Psychopathology

Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to describe, synthesize, and speculate on the complex relationships among opiate abuse behaviors and the phenomena labeled psychopathology. At this juncture in science, univariate, unidirectional models hold little promise, and multivariate interactional perspectives are required to study the factors that influence and are influenced by acute and chronic opiate abuse. This point has been reached because researchers of varied disciplines, working in diverse settings over the past four decades, are recognizing that single explanations are simplistic, if not utterly misleading. Hence, research from such disciplines as psychology, psychiatry, pharmacology, physiology, biochemistry, anthropology, and sociology will demand continued revisions and integration to yield a meaningful picture of opiate abuse and related phenomena. At present, however, the growing contributions of both psychosocial and biomedical researchers are impressive.
