Methodological Problems in Clinical Diagnosis

  • Chapter
Comprehensive Handbook of Psychopathology

Abstract

Problems in clinical diagnosis have been topics of discussion and controversy over the years for a variety of reasons. Conceptual disagreements have stemmed from differences in disciplinary orientation, from theoretical differences, and from discrepant research findings on the reliability and the validity of clinical diagnosis. Issues in clinical diagnosis are complex ones that have important implications for the whole field of psychopathology, including research as well as practical considerations. Consequently, methodological problems are not merely academic concerns but directly affect professionals of all disciplines working in the area of psychopathology and, thus, the actual treatment and disposition of those individuals whose difficulties are considered psychopathological.
