Abstract

Behaviors that fly in the face of social convention and legal restraint have provoked interest and argument throughout recorded history. Deviancy may be regarded as nefarious or adaptive, depending on the context in which it occurs. However, behaviors that offend normative cultural standards and subgroup ethics are typically cast in a negative light, and individuals whose activities are defined as antisocial are often exposed to censure, confinement, and/or punishment. This has been particularly the case for persons whose aberrances cannot be accounted for by occasional departures from personal responsibility, mental illness, or mental retardation. As early clinical accounts described individuals who failed to conform to moral and legal expectations by reference to evil spirits, moral defects, and other maladies, more recent clinical and research work has focused on enumerating types of “antisocial” behavior and searching for biological and psychosocial causes. This chapter reviews historical and present-day conceptualizations of the antisocial personality disorder from a broad perspective. Etiological theories are presented that attempt to explain its origins, concomitants, and progression as well as its associated characteristics and symptoms. Research investigations of the validity of assumptions derived from these theories are also presented, and the techniques available for assessing antisocial cognitions and behavior are reviewed.
