Abstract

Legionella pneumophila was first described in early 1977 by McDade et al.1 They recognized that this organism was the causative agent for the outbreak of acute pneumonia that occurred during the state American Legion convention in Philadelphia that previous summer. Further epidemiologic investigation led to the discovery that these organisms were also responsible for earlier outbreaks of acute disease for which no cause could be found.2,3 Since these initial studies, much has been learned about Legionellae and the diseases caused by them, but our knowledge remains incomplete. Currently, at least seven species are definitely associated with human illness (Table 1),1,4–9 but the number of recognized species is continuing to expand.10
