Chemotherapy

Part of the book series: Cancer ((C,volume 5))

Abstract

Recent successes achieved in the therapy of various types of cancer have in many instances been attributable to the cytotoxicity of new chemotherapeutic agents. Many of the drugs have been used effectively in hematologic neoplasms, and with their use, complete remission and survival rates in childhood leukemia and in Hodgkin’s disease and other lymphomas have increased very significantly. Several of the solid tumors such as sarcomas, breast carcinoma, and testicular cancer have demonstrated sensitivity to single agents and combinations of drugs. Unfortunately, in advanced and metastatic tumors, responses are short-lived, the tumors rapidly become resistant to the drugs, and the patient dies from uncontrollable disease.
