Sequencing the Genome of Sulfolobus solfataricus P2

  • Chapter
Book cover Bacterial Genomes

Abstract

Using a simple strategy and current technology, we are sequencing the genome of the archaeon Sulfolobus solfataricus P2. The resulting data are processed through an efficient and comprehensive semi-automated bioinformatics system, minimizing the effort required to identify the features of interest. The sequence of the Sulfolobus genome will provide more than a string of genes, more than an inventory of thousands of thermostable proteins, and more than a complete set of phylogenetic markers. It will provide a complete genetic description of an organism whose ancestors were poised to become eucaryotes. Comparative studies involving other archaeal genomic sequences will characterize that ancestor, and comparative studies including bacterial genomes will allow us to examine surviving features of the earliest life. Further information about the Sulfolobus genome project can be obtained from our World Wide Web site at: http://www.imb.nrc.ca/imb/sulfolob/sulhom_e. html.
