The Mycobacterial Database MycDB and the Mycobacterial Genome Sequencing Project

  • Chapter
Bacterial Genomes

Abstract

In recent years there has been a considerable upturn in interest in the genetics and microbiology of the mycobacteria (Young and Cole, 1993), and the reasons for this are two-fold. Firstly, after several decades of relative tranquility, mycobacterial diseases are assuming greater importance in terms of public health problems in the industrialized world and secondly, powerful new tools for working with mycobacteria have been developed that allow previously intractable biological and medical problems to be studied (Jacobs et al., 1991).
