Abstract
As described in previous chapters of this book, there has been increasing interest in the use of adenoviruses as a vector for delivering specific genes to the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems in vivo, and the functioning of some of these genes has been demonstrated[1–4]. The purpose of this chapter is to outline the effect adenoviruses have on the heart and lung, and the potential detrimental influences that components of the adenoviral genome could have on the myocardium and lung, thus limiting its usefulness in human gene therapy. This recognition suggests a thorough evaluation of these effects in planning trials directed to the cardiovascular system.
