Abstract
Africa is strongly linked to Europe through the export of goods and the supply of labour. The links, which go back many centuries, have their origin in several factors such as the proximity of the two regions, the differences in their resource endowments, and the legacy of their historical relations. Attempts to strengthen these links after African countries attained independence in the 1960s have found expression in the conclusion of trade agreements governed by the Lomé Conventions.
