Abstract

The development of a “coherent” field-emission electron beam made it possible to directly and even dynamically observe superconducting vortices. Magnetic lines of force of vortices were quantitatively observed as phase contour lines in a holographic interference micrograph. Vortices were observed by Lorentz microscopy as spots consisting of contrasting bright-and-dark features. The dynamic behavior of vortices in superconductors with line defects and point defects was directly observed in real time.
