Classification, staging, and management of non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas

  • Chapter
Surgical Oncology

Part of the book series: Cancer Treatment and Research ((CTAR,volume 90))

Abstract

The understanding and management of lymphomas have evolved significantly over the past decade. Among the most important changes have been the development of new classification systems that include molecular determinants, identification of etiologic factors for mucosa-associated lymphomas (and their implications for management), demonstration of the importance of T cells in the progression of B-cell lymphomas, development of an international tumor scoring system to better determine prognosis, and establishment of bone marrow transplant as effective therapy in relapsed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. This chapter explores these issues and their implications for the practicing oncologist.
