Abstract
The previous section gave a summary of the relevant background material. It addressed the real-time condition which is an important design constraint. The performance, which is at least required from the embedded system, is defined in this way. The application range of the embedded system was investigated and the major compression standards where reviewed. The principal system structure was motivated: a flexible, processor based compression system which is integrated into the video card of a PC. The core of the system is a VLIW processor.
