Abstract

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was founded in Switzerland in 1946. Its purpose is to establish worldwide common standards for manufacturing, services, and trade. More than 90 countries participate, and there are almost 200 technical committees and more than 400 international organizations involved in the development of ISO standards. The United States is represented only by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST). Until a few years ago, ANSI standards were used internationally; ISO standards have replaced most of those.
