Immunochemical Expression of Ecto-ATP-Diphosphohydrolase in Experimental and Clinical Disease

  • Chapter
Book cover Ecto-ATPases

Abstract

It is only since recent years that the potential importance of ecto-ATP-diphosphohydrolase (denoted in this communication as ecto-ATPDase), and other ecto-ATPases are recognized as functional molecules in biological systems. Also alteration of expression of these ecto-enzymes in relation with pathological conditions like epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease, nephrotic syndrome or vessel wall injury is starting to gain attention as described in this volume by Nagy, Sarkis et al., Cheung et al. and Robson et al. respectively. In this mini-review we do not intend to deal thoroughly with aberrant ecto-ATPDase expression described in the literature up to now, but rather to focus on some forms of experimental and clinical disease in which reduced expression of this ecto-enzyme may be attributed to tissue injury in particular mediated by reactive oxygen products (ROS) such as superoxide anions (O2 ).
