Abstract

2’,3’-Cyclic nucleotide 3’-phosphodiesterase (CNP) is a critical component of the molecular machinery that mediates early events in myelinogenesis, in particular the elaboration of oligodendrocyte processes that sample the extracellular space and engage axons in order to initiate myelination. This protein is well known for its in vitro enzymatic activity, as yet of no known physiological importance, but which serves as a useful analytical marker for myelination-related membranes in the CNS even though it does not contribute to the structural lattice of myelin lamellae (Braun et al, 1988; Vogel and Thompson, 1988; Trapp et al, 1989; Sprinkle, 1989; Thompson, 1992; Tsukada and Kurihara, 1992; Gravel et al, 1994).
