Abstract

Myelinogenesis is an essential, highly regulated event that occurs during early mam-malian development whereby internodal axonal segments are enveloped by compacted multilamellar membranes. A single oligodendrocyte in the central nervous system (CNS) has the capacity to extend numerous processes, which develop into elaborate specialized membranes that ensheathe multiple larger diameter axonal segments. Historically, CNS myelin had been characterized as a relatively inert membrane with a relatively simple pro-file of proteins, including proteolipid proteins (PLP, DM20), myelin basic proteins (MBP), myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG), and 2’,3’ -cyclic nucleotide 3’-phosphodi-esterase (CNP). However it is now clear that myelin is an extremely dynamic structure with many quantitatively minor proteins that clearly play significant roles in myelination.
