Abstract

At the initial session with a patient and his parents, a clinician informed the parents about the limits on the number of psychotherapy sessions for the presenting problems given the family’s membership in an HMO. This information, coupled with concerns over confidentiality of the information being sent to the managed care company, resulted in the parents deciding to pay “out of pocket” for the treatment.
