Abstract
As the 20th century draws to a close, educational research is painting a new vision of science education. In this vision, articulated by the National Science Education Standards (National Academy of Sciences 1996), science is best taught and learned when students engage in extended inquiry and research. “Inquiry into authentic questions, generated from student experiences, is the central strategy for teaching science,” the Standards asserts. “Students should experience science that engages them in actively constructing ideas and explanations and that enhances their abilities to do science.”
