Abstract

The Hepatocyte Growth Factor receptor, encoded by the MET proto-oncogene (Naldini et al., 1991b, 1991c; Bottaro et al., 1991), is the prototype of a growing family of tyrosine kinases whose members share structural features of crucial functional relevance. Recently, two molecules have joined the family: the RON and the SEA gene products (Ronsin et al., 1993; Huff et al., 1993; Gaudino et al., 1994). Interestingly, the Ron protein was shown to be the specific receptor for Macrophage Stimulating Protein (MSP), a growth factor highly homologous to Hepatocyte Growth Factor (Gaudino et al., 1994; Wang et al., 1994). Therefore, the ligands for receptors of the MET family form a family themselves (the “HGF family”). So far, the ligand for the putative receptor encoded by the SEA proto-oncogene is elusive.
