Abstract
Bipolar disorder is one of the most common and treatable of the mood disorders, affecting over 1% of adults in industrialized nations over the course of a lifetime.1 The essential feature of bipolar disorder is the presence of one or more manic episodes; usually, there is also a history of major depressive episodes. Bipolar II disorder is characterized by the occurrence of one or more major depressive episodes and at least one hypomanic episode.
