Abstract
Z-pinches have a long history within the experience of fusion research. Their simplicity made them a natural starting point for researchers in the early days of fusion research, and even Tokamaks can trace their ancestry to schemes conceived to stabilize Z-pinches. This paper will concentrate on recent work on linear Z-pinches operating at high density. This is an area which has been pursued at a small level-of-effort by a number of groups over the years. While the state of the art is far from a promising working reactor, innovative solutions to classic Z-pinch problems continue to be developed.
