The most important aspect of emergency psychiatry is the capacity to do an evaluation that is brief but detailed enough to assess risks of suicide, violence, psychiatric pathology, and potentially serious medical conditions. If there is doubt as to diagnosis or treatment, one should err on the side of caution.
