Abstract
The prospect of obtaining element- and site-specific magnetic information has prompted a fury of experiments taking advantage of circular polarized (CP) photons. These experiments, whether performed in absorption, photoemission, or reflection, offer the possibility of determining the magnitude and direction (with respect to a reference direction) of the magnetic moment of each element in the material being investigated. In addition, in principle it is possible to further dissect the individual magnetic moments into the separate contributions made by the electron spin and electron orbit; to determine the magnetic structure of a multilayer (including interfacial magnetic roughness); and to elucidate the spin-dependent electronic structure of a material.
