Abstract

The development of the access network presents telcos with difficult and important strategic problems, both technically and financially. Technically because of the need to accommodate network evolution with changing and still uncertain technologies; financially because of the large cost and economic implications of replacing the present extensive access network. Decisions related to the introduction of new switching and transmission technologies for the core network are generally met within a ten years time frame, compared to 20–30 years for the access network. Although residential fiber in the loop will be a key element in the telco network strategy, its introduction seems to be slower and more complex than foreseen some years ago.
