Abstract

Some of the equipment and components in the TITAN (tool for introduction strategies and techno-economic evaluation of access network) cost database have been on the market for some years. In this case traditional forecast methods can be applied to directly estimate the evolution of cost over time [1]. In studying future strategic network projects such as an upgrade of the present narrowband access network towards a broadband access network, new components and equipment with different degrees of maturity are considered. In some cases only target costs can be obtained. The RACE (research for advanced communications in Europe) 2087/TITAN project has developed a new methodology [2,3] for estimating the cost evolution of those components which combine information from the production process expressed in the learning curves [4–6], and an estimating procedure for the volume forecast of the equipment and components.
