Evidence-Based Transfusion Medicine or the Need to Evaluate Clinical Outcome

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Developments in Hematology and Immunology ((DIHI,volume 33))

Abstract

Evidence based medicine (EBM) is the process of systematically finding, appraising, and subsequently using research findings as the basis for clinical decisions. In practice it means an integration of individual clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systemic research. EBM will never replace clinical skills, clinical judgement and clinical experience. In the concept of EBM a clinical problem will be turned into a clear clinical question and then relevant clinical articles will be searched for, critically appraised (evaluated) for validity and usefulness and the results are finally implemented in clinical practice [1–4].
