Abstract

The study of airline irregular operations in the operations research community has been a very recent phenomenon, compared with other much-researched areas such as flight assignment and crew scheduling. Crew management during irregular operations is usually the bottleneck of the whole system-recovering process due to complicated crew schedules and restrictive crew legalities, as well as the size and scope of the hub-and-spoke networks adopted by major carriers. This chapter introduces and analyzes the crew management problem during irregular operations, also known as crew pairing repair problem. A system-wide, multi-commodity integer network flow model and a heuristic search algorithm are presented and discussed. The computational experiences show that the algorithm is efficient enough for real-time decision support.
