N-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids

Biological Activities, in Relation to the Functioning of Immune Cells and Possible Modification of Induction and Course of Multiple Sclerosis

  • Chapter
Neurochemistry

Abstract

The biological effects of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) were an important field of interest over the past 30–35 years (1–6). Research has mostly been done on the role of PUFAs, and especially, of so-called n-6 fatty acids, in cardiovascular diseases — e.g., thrombosis and atherosclerosis — and in diseases related to disturbances of the functioning of immune cells — inflammations in general, and rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and disorders of the respiratory system in particular.
