Abstract
The main treatment curently available for dry eye is eye drops. Despite a large variety of eye drop formulations, they can only provide lubrication and increased tear film viscosity. These formulations can be characterized as first-generation eye drops. A more effective treatment would be possible with formulations that could stimulate aqueous or mucous secretion. We are currently developing formulations that directly stimulate mucin production. Such formulations would be second-generation eye drops.
