Parallel Pathways of Primate Vision

Sampling of Information in the Fourier Space by M and P Cells

  • Chapter
Development and Organization of the Retina

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSA,volume 299))

Abstract

The visual system is organized in distinct parallel pathways connecting the retina to visual nuclei in the diencephalon and midbrain (Lennie, 1980a, b; Stone, 1983). This seminal principle about the organization of the visual system emerged from anatomical, physiological, and psychophysical experiments carried out in the last three decades, and is reminiscent of classical studies on the organization of the somatic sensory system (Stone, 1983). Notwithstanding, the role of each parallel pathway, and how several pathways share the duties of information processing, remain controversial and still represent a major challenge for those bent on understanding vision and visual dysfunction.
