Abstract

Since the burning of fossil fuels is regarded as being environmentally damaging alternatives, that is renewable energy sources, are continually being investigated. In essence this means using solar power, either directly, or indirectly through the use of biomass and its derivatives. In developing countries some 40% of energy consumed is obtained either directly or indirectly from biomass, compared to figure of only 1% in developed countries. As a result, there is clearly much scope for conversion to biomass utilization in the developed countries.
