Abstract

The pathogenetic mechanisms underlying chest pain in patients with angina and normal coronary arteriograms are controversial and there is no consensus regarding the cause of symptoms in these patients. The identification of a pathogenetic mechanism for syndrome X is complicated by the heterogeneity of patients encompassed by this syndrome. In fact, syndrome X is a true syndrome and not a disease. As such it is based on clinical features such as chest pain and normal coronary arteriograms. These may be the expression of various, often unrelated, disorders.
