Abstract
Lacking or ceased GH secretion from the pituitary gland results in an abnormal metabolic condition where e.g. fasting and stress will be characterised by a relative increase in protein metabolism and reduction in lipid metabolism. Growth hormone deficiency (GHD) and the consequent reduced activity of the GH–IGF-I axis, is, however, not associated with quickly recognised and conspicuous symptoms as often seen in failures of other hormonal systems – e.g. in insulin, cortisol, thyroid or sex steroid deficiency.
