Abstract
Growth hormone (GH) and insulin like growth factor I (IGF-I) play an important role in the neuro-endocrine-immune crosstalk. GH and IGF-I receptors are expressed on the surface of immune cells. GH and IGF-I stimulate the proliferation of immunocompetent cells and modulate several humoral and cellular immune functions. In addition, GH and IGF-I are also synthesized and secreted by various immunocompetent cells. Increasing evidence suggests, that the “immune GH-IGF-I axis” acting in a paracrine/autocrine system between the immunocompetent cells has an important function, and at least in part may exert this function autonomously independent of the endocrine system.
