Abstract
The lack of adequate health care for adolescents in the United States has been well documented. In rural areas the problem is exacerbated by lack of public transportation and an inadequate supply of physicians (Duncan, 1992). Such was the case in Rockingham County, North Carolina, in the spring of 1993. In order for adolescents to receive confidential health care, adolescents had to travel to the county public health department, a distance of ten to fifteen miles from each of the county’s four high schools. This chapter will describe the manner in which Rockingham County addressed this problem and how, with the assistance of university faculty, the County was able to overcome some of the obstacles encountered along the way.
