Abstract
Some symbols look so similar that they are difficult to distinguish even when they are cleanly printed and suffer no imaging defects. Contextual methods are needed to resolve the ambiguity. For example, if an unknown symbol is tall and circular, it could be the numeral 0 or the letter O. But if an adjacent character is a digit, it is more likely to be a zero. Choosing among 1, ⌊, and I for an unknown vertical symbol is especially difficult, and is the topic of Section 3.1. In Section 3.2, we consider 0 and 0, and other confusing pairs.
